CERTIFIED ENGLISH – POLISH TRANSLATION

Certified Translation: What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions I receive is whether I am a sworn translator.

This question arises often, especially since I translate into Polish, and Poland—like Germany and France—has a formal system of sworn translators. In these countries, becoming a sworn translator is a highly regarded achievement, viewed as the pinnacle of a translator’s career.

The simple answer to this question is: No.

But the full answer is more nuanced.

While the UK does not have an equivalent system of sworn translators, it has a robust and reliable system for certifying translations for legal and official purposes. In this section, I’ll explain what certified translation means in the UK and how I can help meet your needs for legal and official translations.

What really matters is that if you need to have translated official documents for the purpose of their use in the UK or Ireland, what you need to is a certified translation. I will explain below what it is and how you can get it.

What Is Certified Translation?

Certified translations are required when translating documents for legal or official purposes. These translations must include a written statement from the translator confirming:

• The translation is a “true and accurate” representation of the original document.

• The date of the translation.

• The translator’s full name and contact details.

Unlike in many European countries, where sworn translators are appointed by government authorities, the UK and the Republic of Ireland rely on professional organizations and self-certification to guarantee the quality and validity of translations.

For example, the UK government website states that certified translations should be performed by translators affiliated with recognized professional bodies, such as:

The Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL)

The Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI)

The Association of Translation Companies (ATC)

My Qualifications and Approach to Certified Translations

I am a full member (MCIL) and a Chartered Linguist (CL) with the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), one of the most respected language industry organizations in the UK. Every certified translation I provide includes my membership details, ensuring that your translation meets the highest professional standards.

For over a decade, my certified translations have been accepted not only in the UK and Ireland but also in countries such as the USA, Australia, and Canada. While my translations have also been used in Poland, I always advise clients to confirm specific requirements with the institution where the translation will be submitted before commissioning the work.
